Anxiety is a complex mental disorder that many people deal with on a daily basis, including me. It’s also one of the most common mental illnesses or disorders in the world’s population. Sometimes this emotion can be mistaken for fear or nervousness. But it’s bigger than that. Read more to understand anxiety and ways to cope with it.

What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is when strong tension and worried thoughts cloud your thoughts to the point where some people can’t go on about them because of the anxiety around the situation. It’s perfectly normal for everyone to experience, but when it begins to cause strain in day-to-day life, it’s much more serious.

Ways to Cope:

Breathing exercises:

When your breath quickens due to pressure, try exercises to help control your breathing pattern. It returns your breathing rate to normal.

A famous breathing exercise is the 4-7-8 breathing technique. You inhale slowly for four seconds, hold for seven, and exhale for eight. This technique is used in all yoga practices.

Walks:

Have you ever taken a refreshing walk and become instantly mindful of the nature around you after experiencing a minor setback with your anxiety? It really helps. When there is too much going on in your mind, nature can help clear it and redirect it to more comfortable places. On some stressful days, all you need is to walk away for a second and combat emotions.

Journaling:

Writing rather than expressing yourself outwardly is one of the best decisions. It keeps you calm while still bringing out whatever emotion you may be feeling at the moment. Journaling is known to reduce any anger and/or stress about almost any overbearing situation. Plus, it helps you keep track of your anxious moments, just in case they become a continuous pattern. Personally, journaling has become a favorite of mine over the course of six months, and as I continue to write about how I feel, it makes my mood 100% better than before!

Anxiety is a rough thing to deal with, especially when it’s almost severe. Following these simple tips can help prevent or reduce the amount of anxiety you may feel. In any journey, you are not alone!
