The 5 Forms of Self Care

What are the types of self-care?

Self-care is not just one category; in fact, it has five sub-categories. The types of self-care are physical, social, mental, spiritual, and emotional. These are for different parts of the body and mind and can help you when you are overstimulated or overworked.

Physical self-care:

It’s what it sounds like! Anything physical can count as ‘physical self-care’. Examples of this could be: taking a bath, drinking some water, doing a light-intensity workout, walking, etc.

Social self-care:

This deals with personal relationships, from romantic to platonic. It’s good not to isolate yourself from people who care. Examples of this may be: calling a friend, volunteering, having a lunch date with a friend or partner, etc.

Mental self-care:

Everyone knows that it’s good to take care of your body, but what about that brain of yours? I’m sure it needs plenty of rest just as much as your body does. After all, it does control our movements. Examples of this may be: taking a nap or catching up on sleep; setting goals; practicing gratitude; listening to a podcast; starting a new hobby; etc.

Spiritual self-care:

This may sound religious, but it’s open to everyone. This means that whatever activity you may do, connect with nature and your soul within to tap into the energies. Examples of this may be: spending time outside, yoga, praying, creating a vision board, meditation, journaling, etc.

Emotional self-care:

Many people tend to struggle with keeping their emotions in check. A lot of them like to push away their feelings because they may not think it matters as much. (Hint: it does.) Examples of this may be journaling, practicing affirmations, practicing mindfulness, setting boundaries, talking to someone, etc.
