What is it?

For those who are constantly on social media but are still confused about the term "hair type" and what exactly it is, this is for you. Simply put, a "hair type" is a way to classify your hair’s natural appearance.

How can I tell what mine is?

There are many ways to find out what your hair type is based on the appearance of your hair in its natural state as the definition suggests.

For Types 1–2, wash typically, then air dry.

For Types 3–4, run underwater until thoroughly drenched.

The Strand Test

You can also do the strand test if you already know the type of hair you have but want to know if it’s fine or coarse (thin or thick).

Fine: You can’t feel the hair in between your fingers.

Medium: It's not as tangible, but you can still feel it.

Coarse/Thick: You can feel it and it is completely tangible.

Still confused?

If this hasn’t been too helpful for your curiosity, here’s the chart in simpler terms:

Straight = 1A - 1C

Wavy = 2A - 2C

Curly = 3A - 3C

Coily = 4A - 4C

Remember that everybody’s hair is different, regardless of whether you have the same type. Whatever works for someone else will not always work for you.

Find products that are tailored to your hair type AND texture, and consider what ingredients you require to protect your hair from damage.
